The Bishop Briggs Experience

Music is everything to me. I work to music. I fall asleep listening to music. I drive, exercise, read, think, and write to music. Where would I be without a good playlist? Honestly, I don’t want to find out.

It’s not often that an artist actually grabs my attention and latches onto my soul. Oh, but when it does, it’s the best feeling ever! The adrenaline tied to discovering a new favorite artist makes life ten times better. The singer who is currently running through my veins is British musician, Bishop Briggs.

Bishop Briggs is a name I hope to hear more often in the circles of music lovers as well as in the media. Briggs’ soothing voice combined with hypnotic music productions, and dramatic lyrics gave birth to soul touching songs like, River, The Way I Do, Wild Horses, and Pray (Empty Gun). With each song, Briggs passionately delivers more than a song. Her music opens your mind and takes you out of reality and places you on a journey. It places you in a story that captures you with her vocals, lyrics, and music production. Bishop Briggs delivers an experience  like no other. With each verse, an emotional connection is established between you and the music.

You Should Be Listening To…

Every now and then I come across an artist whose talents I appreciate. A musician who studies and nurtures his craft. It is undeniable that his heart and soul is deeply implanted in each of his projects. This type of dedication gives birth to impressive lyrics and incredible flow. It gives birth to greatness.

The artist I am referring to goes by the name Vares. His sound is far from a carbon copy. The infusion of hip hop’s past and present cultivates a unique sound and message that will leave you waiting on more of his music. Vares’ talents aren’t just limited to rapping on the verses you hear in his music. He is also the writer of his own music. The lyrics you hear flow from his inner creativity. Vares is truly a lyrical genius!

Lyrics I Love: Your House

It’s Friday, so I will be discussing lyrics I love from songs I love even more. Today’s lyrics are from, Your House, by Alanis Morissette.

I burned your incense
I ran a bath
I noticed a letter that sat on your desk
It said “Hello love, I love you so love, meet me at midnight”
And no, it wasn’t my writing
I’d better go soon
It wasn’t my writing

This song begins with a woman who has entered a home in which she doesn’t have permission to be in. She walks in and goes to what seems to be the room of an ex lover/boyfriend. She later undresses and puts on his robe, goes through his things, and even plays one of his CDs. The chorus consists of her asking this guy if he would forgive her if she danced in his shower, layed in his bed, and stayed all afternoon.  It’s obvious she is trying to obtain a life that once was.

All of these events lead to the lyrics I have chosen. The lyrics that highlight the song in my eyes. She appears to have made the decision to stay until her “love” returns to his house. She burned incense and ran a bath. At this moment she notices a letter on his desk. This letter had been written to the guy, from an unknown person. Possibly his new girlfriend. Now the woman is realizing she shouldn’t be there, and finally asks her “love” to forgive her for crying in his shower and in his bed.

I love these lyrics because this woman apparently hasn’t let go of a love that used to be. She is in such disbelief, that she made herself comfortable in this guy’s home. She has probably gone this far in hopes of a second chance at a relationship with this guy. The letter on his desk confirms there is another “love” in her ex’s life.

This a cappella song, paired with the strong vocals of Alanis Morissette, mixed with a story of a woman who is in denial of a breakup, is compelling. You follow this song as the story quickly moves to the painful ending. It’s easy to feel the curiosity, rebelliousness, and strong desire this woman has.

Lyrics I Love: This Used To Be My Playground

It’s Friday, so I will be discussing lyrics I love from songs I love even more. Today’s lyrics are from This Used To Be My Playground, by Madonna. The lyrics I love are:

This used to be my playground (used to be)
This used to be my childhood dream
This used to be the place I ran to
Whenever I was in need
Of a friend
Why did it have to end

We all have a special place or person we rely on to be there for us during difficult times in our lives. There are also times when that comfort zone is nothing but a memory.

I see the storyteller at an old forgotten house, during the late night hours. Maybe where she grew up or possibly spent a lot of time. Perhaps she has been faced with a life altering event, and her safe and familiar place is her escape. She has returned to  this safe place only to find it is not the same. It seems there is a special person she shared this place with, and their absence has caused her some upset.

The song appears to be about wanting to return to the past, but not being able to. Also, in other lyrics of the song, the storyteller has been warned on more than one occasion to let go of what used to be.

This lyrics, the melody, and of course the singer (Madonna) come together for a beautiful story in song.

Lyrics can be interpreted differently, depending on the person. These are only my views on the lyrics I love. I welcome your take on the lyrics meanings.
